Why I Ditched & Switched

Do you see what I see?  Do you see a pretty bottle, or do you see what's actually inside of these bottles covered with a pretty label?  These are the lotions and body sprays that I have been slathering all over my body for years now.  Why?  Because they smell like beach flowers and peaches and Paris and Waikiki weekends!  And because I didn't know any better.

But since my family started to make the switch to healthier products in our home a few years ago, it got me thinking more about the products that I was using on my body just so I could smell good.

You guys, this stuff is so so so so bad for you.  It's filled with chemicals and toxins that are labeled as "fragrance" and we are putting this stuff all over our skin - our largest organ - every. single. day.  Here's the thing about "fragrance" listed in the ingredients of a product: Because companies consider their scents to be proprietary information, the government does NOT require them to list what ingredients they use to make up their scents.  They can call it "fragrance" on the label, and they are covered.  But we as consumers are not being protected.  We assume that if it's on the shelf, if it's FDA approved, that it must be safe, right?  So we buy it and we put in on our skin and our babies skin, and our children's skin and it's not good.  I know we have all gotten that pink bottle of lotion at our baby showers, right??  We are wearing those toxins and breathing them in all day long, and then we wonder why there is so much sickness in our world.

Let me give you some stats to roll around with mmmmkay???

In 2016, 1.7 MILLION new cancer cases were reported according to the National Institute of Cancer.  That's not including people who were already diagnosed and going through it, or any new cases this year, that is only NEW cases in 2016.  I know 3 people close to me that have been diagnosed with cancer in the last 2 years, and I'm sure that's a low number compared to some of you guys. That's insane.

10-25% of pregnancies today end in miscarriage according to the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.  Almost 1/4th!!!!  I personally have gone through 3 miscarriages in my life and I can tell you they are heartbreaking!  I wonder often if I knew then what I know now about what I put on my body if maybe those miscarriages could have been avoided.  This statistic doesn't even cover the thousands of couples who are struggling with infertility and trying to get pregnant.  Guess what?  I'm a part of that statistic too my friends and it's sickening to me.  It disgusts me that our government is allowing companies to sell us so much junk!

1 in 3 seniors dies with some form of Alzheimer's or Dementia, and 1/2, HALF or all adults are living with some type of chronic disease (Center For Disease Control).

Why are we ok with this?  Why are we ok using products on ourselves and our families and in our homes that are full of so much crap?  The only answer I can come up with is it's because we just don't know any better.  I know I had NO CLUE that this stuff could be doing me harm.  NO clue.  Until I started doing my own research.  I am still taking baby steps to clean the junk out of my life, but I'm taking steps nonetheless.

Have you heard of the app called Think Dirty??  If not, you need to stop and download it right this second.  Start scanning the cleaning products, your shampoo, your deodorant, your kid's toothpaste, see how clean the products you are using really are.  I was floored when I started using this app, but it opened my eyes to a world of yuck that I was not even aware of.  Or maybe I was just oblivious to it.  Either way, I'm making changes and this is just another step towards healthier living.

So, what do I use now instead of this junk?  It's so easy, and so simple (and it cleared up a lot of space on my old lotion shelf).  I buy these big jars of organic coconut oil from Costco, this is my new lotion.  And I get to add my choice of essential oils to it so that I still smell good, and I am giving my body health benefits instead of doing it harm.  Coconut oil by itself is amazing for your skin--go ahead and google all of the benefits, there are tons!--and adding oils to the mix just beefs up the benefits for me!

So I smell great, I don't have to worry about my kids possibly getting into lotions and sprays that would be harmful to them, and I'm getting amazing skin and health benefits in the process.

When we know better, we can do better.  I think we as a people can do so much better.
